About the Ship
Oosterdam was launched in 2003 as the second of Holland America’s 82,000-ton Vista-class ships. Designers incorporated bright colors throughout the vessel -- a departure from the line’s more traditional, muted color palette. Offering its more lounges, more balcony cabins, and a significantly larger fitness center and spa, Oosterdam nonetheless retains the traditional features Holland enthusiasts love, including Dutch high tea, the gourmet Pinnacle Grill restaurant, live big band and jazz ensembles for pre-dinner dancing. Gleaming even more after Signature of Excellence upgrades in 2006, Oosterdam is a great choice for the seasoned passenger loyal to Holland America, while modern enough to please any younger passengers who want to try out the line.
The hottest new amenity is the ship’s Culinary Arts Center, presented by Food & Wine magazine. Formerly the Wajang Theatre and now the Queen’s Lounge, the stage has been designed as though it's a set from the Food Network, with cameras, kitchen, and television-type lighting. Visiting chefs demonstrate as large plasma video screens show close-ups of every maneuver. Holland America will be hosting 60 "celebrity chefs" per year on all of their ships.
Holland America Line likes to stick to tradition, and Oosterdam is no exception. Expect ballroom dancing, high tea, and very formal formal nights. Like all ships in the fleet, Oosterdam has a staff that puts passengers first, greeting all with a smile and never missing a chance to say Good morning or Good night. Guests will relish the line’s signature art collection and grand vases of fresh flowers decorating the lounges and hallways, and will be awed by the views from the glass elevators that overlook the wide, blue sea instead of the atrium.
Though older crowds still make up the majority of the passenger base, a decidedly younger group appears to be choosing the venerable line and programming has risen to the occasion. Wine tasting and cooking courses are popular and increased Greenhouse Spa and fitness programs -- the hydrotherapy suites and pool, for example -- are geared to younger cruisers. Latte lovers can get their fix at the Windstar Café and check email at the Internet center, and the Northern Lights Nightclub rocks. However, Oosterdam is not a party barge, so young singles, or party-eager couples, will want to steer away from this ship. Adequate children’s facilities provide entertainment for kids 3-18, though in general, except for summers and school holidays, the number of children sailing is low.
